INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis, a common skeletal disorder mainly affecting postmenopausal women, is characterized by the imbalance between osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. Circ_0134944 has been recently found to be upregulated in postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) patients. However, its role in osteogenesis remains unknown. Here we aimed to explore the role of circ_0134944 in osteogenesis and reveal the underlying mechanism. METHODS: qRT-PCR was used to determine the expression of circ_0134944, miR-127-5p, PDX1 and SPHK1 in the blood mononuclear cells (BMCs) of PMOP patients. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were used as the cellular model. Western blotting and qRT-PCR were used to determine the expression of osteogenesis-related genes (Runx2, OPN, OCN). ALP and Alizarin Red S staining were performed to evaluate osteogenic differentiation. The interactions between circ_0134944 and miR-127-5p, miR-127-5p and PDX1, PDX1 and SPHK1 were determined by dual-luciferase reporter and ChIP assay. RESULTS: Circ_0134944, PDX1 and SPHK1 were upregulated while miR-127-5p was downregulated in PMOP patients. Enhanced expression of circ_0134944 suppressed osteogenesis, which was then reversed by miR-127-5p overexpression. The binding between circ_0134944 and miR-127-5p, PDX1 and miR-127-5p were confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Moreover, PDX1 was enriched in the promoter region of SPHK1, and SPHK1 overexpression prevented the promotion of osteogenesis induced by miR-127-5p overexpression. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, these results demonstrate that circ_0134944 inhibit osteogenesis via miR-127-5p/PDX1/SPHK1 axis. Thus, the present study offered evidence that circ_0134944/miR-127-5p/PDX1/SPHK1 axis could be a potential therapeutic target for PMOP.

In urban solid waste management, the scientific and reasonable disposal and utilization of sewage sludge is becoming more and more important. It can be said that the pollution status and chemical properties of sewage sludge in urban sewage treatment plants can provide a basis for the scientific disposal and utilization of sludge. In this study, the characteristics of pH, moisture content, Cd, Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Hg, Ni, mineral oil, volatile phenol, PAHs, organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were evaluated in sewage sludge collected from 49 sewage treatment plants in a certain city. The pollution status of heavy metals and organic pollutants, the frequency distribution of pollutant concentrations, and changes in the nutrient content were analyzed. The Nemero index and Hakanson potential ecological hazard index were used to assess the potential ecological risks of heavy metals in the agricultural utilization process of sludge. The results showed that under the condition of neutral pH values and high moisture content, the order of heavy metal content was Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > Ni > As > Hg > Cd. The principal component analysis (PCA) results indicated that Cd, Pb, Hg, Ni, and As constituted the main load factors of the first main component of heavy metal sources. The most concentrated contents of 8 heavy metal frequency distributions among the 49 samples were 38.9-1380.0, 62.6-182.7, 63.6-181.3, 0.0-97.8, 19.3-68.4, 0.8-29.2, 0.3-8.7, and 0.01-0.96 mg·kg-1. In addition, the most concentrated frequency distribution of mineral oil, volatile phenol, and PAH concentration were 87.0%, 87.9%, and 77.6%, respectively. Moreover, the nutrient content of sludge was higher than the average level in China, and the organic matter content was 67.4%, 75.9%, and 92.5% of that of pig manure, cow dung, and chicken manure, while the content of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium was not very different. The Nemero index and Hakanson ecological hazard index results showed that the sludge of urban sewage treatment plant in the city has certain ecological risks. However, four sewage treatment plants were heavily polluted or highly ecologically hazardous among the 44 plants in this study, which were in line with the Standards for pollutant control of agricultural sludge. In summary, there are certain potential ecological risks for the agricultural utilization of sludge in the city, and it is necessary to reduce the heavy metal content before resourcing. More importantly, on the premise that the sludge meets the agricultural standards, a comprehensive ecological risk assessment is required to select a reasonable sludge recycling method.

Bulk gasoline terminals are an important emission source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in cities. Beijing started to promote the installation of oil and gas recovery devices at oil storage terminals in 2006 to reduce VOCs emissions, since then VOCs emissions from the terminals have been monitored by the municipal government every year. This paper analyzes the VOCs emission characteristics of oil storage terminals in Beijing from 2012 to 2019. We found that the VOCs import concentration was 165.3 g·m-3 in 2019 and had experienced a decline-rise-decline pattern during 2012-2019. The emission concentration was 7.3 g·m-3 in 2019 and had declined continuously during the preceding eight years. The removal efficiency of VOCs of the gas recovery devices tended to be stable and ranged from 45.5% to 100%. Although the emission concentration had decreased significantly, the removal efficiency of the recovery unit at the oil storage terminals had decreased. Therefore, this paper proposed to strengthen process management, the inspection of the service life of the oil and gas recovery units, and check and maintain records. In addition, the removal efficiency index should be included in the scope of law enforcement and "double index" requirements should be implemented This paper will provide a scientific basis for the future development of atmospheric improvement measures.

To understand the contents of various phosphorus forms, phosphorus solubilizing bacte-rial community structure and the relationship between them in soils after restoration from the seriously burning, we collected soil samples from artificial restoration (Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica plantation, Larix gmelinii plantation), artificial accelerated natural restoration (secondary forest) and natural restoration (natural secondary forest) stands in Greater Khingan Mountain area. Using methods of Sui et al. modified from Hedley phosphorus fractionation, we measured the contents of different phosphorus forms in rhizosphere soil and bulk soil (0-10, 10-20 cm). Abundances of phosphorus solubilizing bacteria were quantified by high-throughput sequencing method. The results showed that the contents of H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi and NaHCO3-Poin 0-10 cm bulk soil and NaHCO3-Po in rhizosphere soil followed the order of L. gmelinii plantation : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation : natural secondary forest : secondary forest. The contents of H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi, NaHCO3-Po in 10-20 cm bulk soil and H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi in rhizosphere soil followed the order of L. gmelinii plantation : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation : secondary forest : natural secondary forest. The ratios of contents of H2O-Pi, NaHCO3-Pi and NaHCO3-Po in rhizosphere to those in bulk soil (R/S) were higher than 1 in all forest stands. The moderately labile NaOH-P included NaOH-Pi and NaOH-Po. The content of NaOH-P was in order of L. gmelinii plantation : natural secondary forest : secondary forest : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation in 0-10 cm layer of bulk and rhizosphere soil, and ranked as L. gmelinii plantation : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation : secondary forest : natural secondary forest in 10-20 cm layer of bulk soil. There was rhizosphere effect of NaOH-P in the soil. The stable HCl-P included HCl-Pi and HCl-Po. The content of HCl-P followed the order of L. gmelinii plantation : natural secondary forest : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation : secondary forest in 0-10 cm layer of bulk soil,and ranked as L. gmelinii plantation : P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation : natural secondary forest : secondary forest in the 10-20 cm layer. The content of residual-P in the soil was not sensitive to restoration methods. Bradyrhizobium, Streptomyces, Burkholderia and Bacillus were the main phosphorus solubilizing bacteria across all forest stands. The abundances of phosphorus solubilizing bacteria in soil of L. gmelinii plantation and P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation were significantly higher than that of secondary forest and natural secondary forest. Results of redundancy analysis showed that the correlation between phosphorus solubilizing bacteria and various phosphorus forms was different. Our results showed that artificial afforestation was more conducive in improving the availability of phosphorus in soil and the abundance of phosphorus solubilizing bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) of "Neiguan" (PC6) of the Pericardium Meridian, "Shenmen" (HT7) of the Heart Meridian,"Shuigou" (GV26) of the Governor Vessel and "Zhaohai" (KI6) of the Kidney Meridian on myocardial and cerebral cell apoptosis in cerebral ischemia (CI) rats, so as to explore its mechanism underlying improvement of CI based on the theory of "Heart-brain Correlation". METHODS: Forty-eight SD rats (half male and half female) were randomly divided into normal control, model, PC6, HT7, GV26 and KI6 groups (n=8 in each one). The CI model was established by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO). EA (4 Hz/20 Hz, 1.5 mA) was applied to the right PC6, HT7, GV26 or KI6 respectively for 30 min, once every 12 h for 5 times. The cell apoptosis of the ischemic myocardial and cerebral tissues was detected by TUNEL method, and the expression of cerebral and myocardial Bax and Bcl-2 was determined by using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Following modeling, the cell apoptosis percentages and Bax-positive cells of both myocardial and cerebral tissues were significantly increased in the model group in comparison with the control group (P<0.01). After EA intervention, the cerebral apoptotic percentage and cerebral Bax-positive cells in the cerebral tissue of the PC6, HT7 and GV26 groups, and the myocardial apoptosis percentage in the PC6 and HT7 groups, as well as the myocardial Bax-positive cells in the PC6 group were obviously decreased (P<0.05, P<0.01), while the cerebral Bcl-2 positive cells in the PC6, HT7 and GV26 groups, and the myocardial Bcl-2 positive cells in the PC6 and HT7 groups were significantly increased relevant to the model group (P<0.01, P<0.05). No significant changes were found in the KI 6 group in the cell apoptosis index and percentages and Bax- and Bcl-2-positive cells of both myocardium and cerebral cortex tissues compared with the model group (P>0.05).. CONCLUSION: EA stimulation of PC6 and HT7 can inhibit CI injury induced cell apoptosis of cerebral and myocardial tissues in CI rats, which is possibly associated with its effects in down-regulating Bax expression and up-regulating Bcl-2 expression of both myocardial and cerebral tissues.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the changes of brain rest-state functional connectivity following electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of right Xia-Jiquan (HT 1), Shaohai (HT 3), Lingdao (HT 4) and Shenmen (HT 7) of the Heart Meridian and non-acupoints in healthy volunteers so as to provide an imaging basis for clinical treatment of some related disorders. METHODS: A total of 20 healthy volunteers who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into HT-acupoint group (n=10 cases) and non-acupoint group (n=10 cases) according to the visiting sequence. EA (2 Hz, 2-5 mA) was applied to the right HT 1-HT 3, and HT 4-HT 7 (two outputs of the EA stimulator being connected to two acupuncture needle handles) and non-acupoints (4 spots on the imaginary mid-line between the HT and the Pericardium Meridian apart from the 4 acupoints HT 1-HT 3, and HT 4-HT 7) for 6 min. All the subjects underwent resting-state (rs) fMRI using an Achieva 1.5 T magnetic resonance image (MRI) scanner before and after EA stimulation. The bilateral posterior cingulate was used as the seed point and the functional connectivity data was analyzed by using DPARSF software and rs-fMRI data analysis toolkit. RESULTS: After EA stimulation of both acupoints and non-acupoints, a similar functional connectivity change was found in the bilateral postcentral gyrus, right inferior parietal lobule, and right inferior frontal gyrus. After EA of acupoints of the HT Meridian, an enhancement of brain functional connectivity was found in the left inferior temporal gyrus and right parahippocampal gyrus, and the newly activated brain regions were the left precentral gyrus, right precuneus, left angular gyrus, left inferior occipital gyrus and the left insula. After EA stimulation of non-acupoints, an increased functional connectivity was found in the left superior temporal gyrus, which was different from EA of acupoints of HT Meridian. CONCLUSIONS: EA stimulation of acupoints of the HT Meridian can enhance the rs functional connectivity in some brain regions as the postcentral gyrus, inferior temporal gyrus, etc. which is related to mediating information of somatosensory, cognitive, affective, memory, cardiovascular activities, etc. in healthy volunteer subjects. The only difference between the two EA groups is an enhanced functional connectivity found in the left superior temporal gyrus after EA of non-acupoints.

However, basic theories of CM and WM are hard to integrate at the present stage due to radical difference in world view and methodology between them. CM and WM share the same objective, i.e., saving life and treating disease, so they can be integrated technologically. And only in this way can focus the integration of CM and WM on solving practical problems and obtaining clinical efficacy. The integration in this way is firmly and valuable.

NH3 is one of the main odors produced from landfill sites. It is also an important precursor of PM2.5. According to the NH3 of ambient air and non-organizational waste gas monitoring method, the research studied NH3 emission characteristics of two landfill sites in Beijing. The results showed that the NH3 concentrations in waste pit, sludge treatment workshop and leachate equalization basin were 0.078-0.341mg·m-3. The NH3 concentration of key processes was rising in daytime and decreasing in night. Temperature and relative humidity were main meteorological influencing factors, and NH3 concentration was low in rainy weather. The NH3 concentration declined significantly along downwind directions, by 60.00% at 100m out of boundary and 69.90% at 300 m. This reasearch provides scientific support for further study on localization of NH3 emission characteristics and NH3 emission monitoring management.

Tailpipe emission of internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) is one of the main sources leading to atmospheric environmental problems such as haze. Substituting electric vehicles for conventional gasoline vehicles is an important solution for reducing urban air pollution. In 2011, as a pilot city of electric vehicle, Beijing launched a promotion plan of electric vehicle. In order to compare the environmental impacts between Midi electric vehicle (Midi EV) and Hyundai gasoline taxi (ICEV), this study created an inventory with local data and well-reasoned assumptions, and contributed a life cycle assessment (LCA) model with GaBi4.4 software and comparative life cycle environmental assessment by Life cycle impact analysis models of CML2001(Problem oriented) and EI99 (Damage oriented), which included the environmental impacts of full life cycle, manufacture phase, use phase and end of life. The sensitivity analysis of lifetime mileage and power structure was also provided. The results indicated that the full life cycle environmental impact of Midi EV was smaller than Hyundai ICEV, which was mainly due to the lower fossil fuel consumption. On the contrary, Midi EV exhibited the potential of increasing the environmental impacts of ecosystem quality influence and Human health influence. By CML2001 model, the results indicated that Midi EV might decrease the impact of Abiotic Depletion Potential, Global Warming Potential, Ozone Layer Depletion Potential and so on. However, in the production phase, the impact of Abiotic Depletion Potential, Acidification Potential, Eutrophication Potential, Global Warming Potential, Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential, Ozone Layer Depletion Potential, Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity Potential, Terrestric Ecotoxicity Potential, Human Toxicity Potential of Midi EV were increased relative to Hyundai ICEV because of emissions impacts from its power system especially the battery production. Besides, in the use phase, electricity production was the main process leading to the impact of Abiotic Depletion Potential, Acidification Potential, Eutrophication Potential, Global Warming Potential, Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential, Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity Potential, Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity Potential, Human Toxicity Potential. While for Hyundai ICEV, gasoline production and tailpipe emission were the primary sources of environmental impact in the use phase. Tailpipe emission was a significant cause for increase in Eutrophication Potential and Global Warming Potential, and so forth. On the basis of inventory data analysis and 2010 Beijing electricity mix, the comparative results of haze-induced pollutants emissions showed that the full life cycle emissions of PM2.5, NO(x), SO(x), VOCs of Midi EV were higher than those of Hyundai ICEV, but the emission of NH3 was lower than that of Hyundai ICEV. Different emissions in use phase were the chief reason leading to this trend. In addition, by sensitivity analysis the results indicated that with the increase of lifetime mileage and proportion of cleaning energy, the rate of GHG( Green House Gas) emission reduction per kilometer of Midi EV became higher with respect to Hyundai ICEV. Haze-induced pollutants emission from EV could be significantly reduced using cleaner power energy. According to the assessment results, some management strategies aiming at electric car promotion were proposed.

Spatial and temporal distribution of SO2 during 2000-2014 was all analyzed based on the SO2 monitoring data that Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center released and the formation mechanism of a typical air pollution episode in January 2014 was also investigated by combining numerical model CAM(x). Analysis results showed that mass concentration of ρ(SO2) in Beijing in 2014 decreased 69% compared to that in 2000 with an annual gradient from 2000 to 2014 of - 3.5 µg x (m3 x a)(-1). Monthly average concentration of SO2 changed in a U shape curve and from the lowest to the highest, and seasonal variations of SO2 concentrations were as follows: winter > spring > autumn > summer; concentration of SO2 in heating season was significantly higher than that in non heating season. Annual average concentration of SO2 was lower in northern and western regions while higher in six city area and southern area. Concentrations of SO2 at Shijingshan, Dongsi, Tongzhou monitoring sites were significantly decreased related to SO2 emission reduction measures. During a heavy air pollution process in January 14 - 18th 2014 there was obviously SO2 regional transportation and model simulation analysis based on PAST showed that the contribution of SO2 regional transport to Beijing was 83% with elevated power plants surrounding Beijing accounting for 21% and the four major Beijing power plants contributing about 3.5% to the SO2 concentration during this heavy air pollution process.

BACKGROUND: In the absence of acute clinical manifestation, the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is usually done by serology, which has been an important tool in the clinical medicine. METHODS: Many commercial CMV IgG avidity kits are available for identification. We decided to evaluate the Autobio Diagnostics Co., Ltd cytomegalovirus IgG avidity diagnostic kit for recent infection by comparing the performances of different CMV IgG avidity diagnostic kits on three commercially available seroconversion panels. RESULTS: In this study, we described the application of some commercial CMV IgG avidity diagnostic kits in the diagnostics of CMV recent infection. The results of three commercially available seroconversion panels RP-003, RP-019, and PTC901 with a total of 37 samples showed that 99 days after seroconversion, the values of Autobio CMV IgG avidity higher than 50% indicated a high avidity, the high avidity can exclude recent 3 months infection. A total of 130 specimens were tested and compared with the RADIM CMV IgG avidity assay. Seven gray zone results were excluded. The low avidity sample agreement was 100% (22/22), high avidity sample agreement was 95.0% (96/101). The specificity of the Autobio CMV IgG avidity assay was evaluated by testing a total of 744 specimens which were reactive with the Autobio CMV IgG assay and nonreactive with the Autobio CMV IgM assay. Seventeen gray-zone specimens were excluded, the clinical specificity of the Autibio CMV IgG avidity assay was 97.4% (708/727). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that the Autobio CMV IgG avidity assay is a comparatively reliable tool to identify CMV recent infection according to these performance evaluation data.

The recognition of targets such as biomacromolecules, viruses and cells by their aptamers is crucial in aptamer-based biosensor platforms and research into protein function. However, it is difficult to evaluate the binding constant of aptamers and their targets that are hard to purify and quantify, especially when the targets are undefined. Therefore, we aimed to develop a modified capillary electrophoresis based method to determine the dissociation constant of aptamers whose targets are hard to quantify. A protein target, human thrombin, and one of its aptamers were used to validate our modified method. We demonstrated that the result calculated by our method, only depending on the aptamer's concentrations, was consistent with the classical method, which depended on the concentrations of both the aptamers and the targets. Furthermore, a series of DNA aptamers binding with avian influenza virus H9N2 were confirmed by a four-round selection of capillary electrophoresis-systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment, and we identified the binding constant of these aptamers by directly using the whole virus as the target with the modified method. In conclusion, our modified method was validated to study the interaction between the aptamer and its target, and it may also advance the evaluation of other receptor-ligand interactions.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the impacts on repeated common cold for the adults with different constitutions treated by acupoint application in the dog days (the three periods of the hottest days) and the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice (the three periods of the coldest days). METHODS: One hundred and fifty-two cases of repeated common cold were divided into four zones according to the body constitution. Each zone was sub-divided into a group of the dog days + the three nine-day periods of the coldest days (group A), and a simple group of the dog periods (group B). In both groups, Dazhui (GV 14), Feishu (BL 13), Tiantu (CV 22), Danzhong (CV 17), Zhongfu (LU 1) and Shenshu (BL 23) were selected. In group A, the acupoint application was given on the 1st or 2nd day of the first, second and third periods of the hottest days in 2010, as well as the 1st or 2nd day of the first, second and third periods of the coldest days in 2010 separately. In group B, the acupoint application was only given on the 1st or 2nd day of the first, second and third periods of the hottest days in 2010. The follow-up visit was conducted before the acupoint application in the three periods of the coldest days in 2010 and before the acupoint application in the three periods of the hottest days in 2011. Additionally, the frequency of disease attack and the symptom score in sickness were taken as the observation indices for the efficacy assessment in both groups. RESULTS: (1) In both groups, the attack frequency was reduced obviously in half a year after the three periods of the hottest days for the patients of qi deficiency constitution, yang deficiency constitution and qi stagnation constitution and the clinical symptom score were reduced apparently (all P<0.01), which were superior to those for the patients of phlegm damp constitution (P<0.01, P<0.05). For the patients of phlegm damp constitution, only the clinical symptom score was reduced (P<0.01). (2) In group A, the improvements were received in the attack frequency and the clinical symptom score in half a year after the three periods of the coldest days for the patients of those four constitutions as compared with those before treatment (all P<0.01). In group B, the attack frequency and the clinical symptom score were all back to the level as those before treatment. (3) In group A, in half a year after the three periods of the coldest days, the efficacy for reducing the attack frequency and the improvements in the clinical symptoms were better than those in group B (all P<0.01). CONCLUSION: The acupoint application in the dog days and the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice reduces the attack frequency and relieves the clinical symptoms of common cold for the adults of individual constitutions to different extents. The efficacy can be further improved in the treatment with the acupoint application in the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice half a year after the acupoint application in the dog days.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically observe the clinical effect on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) at the stable stage, differentiated as cold phlegm blocking the lung type, treated with acupoint sticking therapy during the dog days and the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice so as to propose the latest clinical idea and theoretic evidence for the treatment of COPD. METHODS: One hundred and fifty cases of COPD at stable stage, which were in accordance with the inclusive standard were randomly divided into three groups, named group A (treatment in dog days and the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice), group B (treatment in dog days) and group C (treatment in the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice), 50 cases in each group. The ingredients (Semen Brassicae, Euphoribia Kansui, Asarum, Rhizome Corydalis, Cinnamon, ginger juice) and doses of herbal medicine plaster were same in each group. The herbal plaster was applied to Feishu (BL 13), Shenshu (BL 23), Dazhui (GV 14), Tiantu (CV 22), Danzhong (CV 17) and Zhongfu (LU 1). In group B, the treatment was given once on the 1st day of each dog-day period, totally 3 treatments were included. In group C, the treatment was given once on the 1st day of each nine-day periods after the winter solstice, totally, 3 treatments were involved. In group A, the treatment was given once on the 1st day of each dog-day period and each nine-day periods after the winter solstice separately, totally 6 treatments were required. The therapeutic effect was evaluated in 4 aspects, named comprehensive clinical efficacy, survival quality (the scores for symptoms, activity limitation and influence on daily life), the attach frequency and pulmonary function. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 88.0% (46/50) in group A, which was superior to 76.0% (38/50) in group B and 70.0% (35/50) in group C separately (P < 0.01, P < 0.001). The results of the attack frequency, clinical symptom score and pulmonary function indices after treatment were all improved apparently as compared with those before treatment in each group (all P < 0.01). All the above indices in group A were improved much apparently as compared with the other two groups (P < 0.01, P < 0.001). Except for the level of forced vital capacity (FVC), the results of clinical symptom score and the other pulmonary function indices in group B were all improved significantly as compared with group C (P < 0.05, P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Acupoint sticking therapy during different season of the year achieves a superior clinical efficacy for the patients with COPD at stable stage. This therapy can reduce the attack frequency and improve the survival quality and pulmonary function for the patients. It is concluded that the efficacy of the treatment in dog days and the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice is superior to simple dog-day treatment and the treatment in the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice, and the efficacy of dog days treatment is better than that in the three nine-day periods after the winter solstice.

Observational data in clean area provides important references for evaluating environmental impact both from natural and anthropogenic sources. Atmospheric particulate matter of different size were closely examined using dustfall data during 1980-2009, TSP data during 1991-2009 and PM10 data since 2000 at Dingling station (DL), which was located in the clean area of Beijing. It was shown that dustfall amount at DL was on decrease in the last 30 years, by reasons of anthropogenic emission control and ecological environment improvement; meanwhile there was a 5-6 years' cycle of variation in yearly dustfall amount partly caused by dust storms. Similarly TSP and PM10 concentrations changed greatly but had a decreasing trend since 2000. Furthermore, the ratios of Pb and BaP in TSP at DL, namely Pb/TSP and BaP/TSP, were analyzed for anthropogenic influence. It was proved that the ratios were increasing and there was stronger influence of regional pollutant transport from urban areas. Lastly, it was also found that the coarser atmospheric particles were, the stronger their seasonal fluctuations in mass were, which were mainly affected by local sources rather than regional, and vice verse.

A fully automated and portable analyzer for field speciation of inorganic chromium in wastewater was developed. The instrument consists of a micro-sequential injection lab-on-valve (LOV) system and a miniature USB2000 spectrophotometer. A multi-purpose flow cell was incorporated on one side of the main body of the LOV, which offers vast potentials and versatilities in its compatibility with various detection modes. On-line oxidation of trivalent chromium was performed on a bismuthate immobilized silica micro-column reactor integrated in the LOV. When determining Cr(VI), its chromogenic reaction with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide (DPC) was facilitated in the flow cell and the absorbance was monitored in situ at 548 nm via optical fibers. While for the quantification of total chromium, Cr(III) was oxidized on-line by aspirating sample solution through the oxidizing column reactor, followed by chromogenic reaction with DPC and the absorbance was monitored in the flow cell. With a sampling volume of 200 microl, the detection limits of 5.6 microg l(-1) for Cr(VI) and 6.8 microg l(-1) for total chromium were achieved along with a sampling frequency of 60 h(-1). A R.S.D. value of 2.0% was recorded at 32 microg l(-1) of Cr(VI). The practical applicability of the speciation analyzer was validated by analyzing Cr(VI) and total chromium contents in two certified reference materials. The feasibility of performing rapid field speciation of chromium in wastewater samples was also demonstrated.

OBJECTIVE: To search for a therapy for edema of the affected limb in patients of hemiplegia after stroke. METHODS: Eighty patients were randomly divided into a treatment group and a control group, 40 cases in each group. The treatment group were treated by blood-letting puncture at 12 Jing-well points of the hand combined with fuming and washing with herbal lotion, and the control group were treated by oral administration of diuretic. The therapeutic effect was observed after treatment for 10 days. RESULTS: The total effective rate was 85.0% in the treatment group and 70.0% in the control group with a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). The cumulative score of symptoms of edema, improvement of skin pitting, damp and cool sensation, the function of limbs and the total score in the treatment group were better than the control group (P < 0.05); the cumulative score of TCM syndrome after treatment, improvement of the symptoms of limb flaccid paralysis, shortness of breath, weakness, dark-pale tongue proper and the total cumulative score were better than the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Blood-letting puncture at 12 Jing-well points of the hand combined with fuming and washing with Chinese herbal lotion is effective for edema of the affected limb in patients of hemiplegia after stroke.
